View Full Version : Upper tie bar

I was wondering about the logic of fitting the upper engine tie bar and possibly also that little shock absorber from the camry front engine mount.

Does the 3VZ rock back and forth with all that torque? and if it does, would that extend the life of the Y pipe and exhaust?

Even the old mini's had an engine top tie bar to reduce the rocking.

We fitted some decent poly mounts on Pats car - it ain't moving now!!!!

You can also 'make your own'...

I had a few assorted mounts kicking around so I made a couple of rough ones with silicone sealant.

I did them in White for two reasons-

1) I wanted to be able to monitor them once they get some stick

2) I have shitloads of White for some reason

Tacked them up first:-

Then when they were dry, slapped it in there:-

Then once they had gone off propper I fitted them to the car:-

These were literally a rough draft just to see how they held up.

I did the front and rear mounts, although I'm told that only the rubbish front bobbin one really needs replacing generally.

So far so good, the engine seems pretty firm. Will see what happens after a few weeks of abuse. Probably remove them and inspect them, then do a proper set in black.

Silicon sealant??!! I can't believe that works, surely its too weak to hold up. Eurethane, now that would be good

Dunno really, so I guess we will find out!

I read somewhere that someone had done it and it worked ok. Considering that it's in addition to what was there already, it's hardly going to plop out of the engine bay.

I can see Mr Woods frowning from here....

Just buy the proper ones for the car, the ones you listed are just as expensive, only in the states and a complete mess to make up. buy these, the one I got they fit well anddo the job: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/POWERFLEX-FRONT-REAR-ENGINE-MOUNT-KIT-TOYOTA-MR2-SW20-/310235571909?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item483b7b26c5

Yep, thems the ones we fitted to Pats car!

We bought them from Hasad who found them a bit too solid by all accounts! On his advice I modded the front one to add a bit of flexibility to it:-

Drilling the mount was a tad interesting! The rubber returns to a sticky goo around the drill when it gets hot!

Silicone may last a while, but won't be as hard as eurathane. Best thing to do if filling mounts is to wash them with soapy water 1st to get dirt etc off. Then let them dry, and fill once dry. Eurathane u can get in form of tigerseal. The stuff used to glue windscreens into cars. That stuff goes solid once dry, silicone will still allow a little movement, and won't be as harsh a ride as the eurathane, but in reflection may not last as long, will have to test and see how long they last

Yeah, thats kind of the plan.

I figured it was easy enough to swap them back (i have more) if they tear up, but considering that a smidgy little line of silicone holds a fish tank together, a shitload of it whacked into an already rubbery mount should be pretty solid.

I will of course let you know how i get on!

My plan is much the same, I will re-enforce the mounts while I have the engine out.. will be starting my own swap blog soon

Yay! Do it! With lots of photos!

We get to congratulate you on your fine work and laugh at the spacky stuff then!

Dont forget a 'last hurrah' video of the Cammy before you hack the V6 out!!

- spot on Limeymk1, can you share the product details, so I can go search for one of these on the net? even the position of fitment on that pic looks on the right lines for the V6 in the MR2...or I'll buy the one off you, if you decide not to fit it.

I've no idea what the manufacturer's details are Bri, mine's like that but blue with no brackets I'm going to have to fabricate them. I saw them on a stand at JAE and thought they'd be ideal so grabbed one without any fittings. :icon_mrgreen:

For tinternet searching put 'engine damper' in.
