ive noticed my steering being quite wobbly 50mph+ it feels like the wheels are un balanaced but tyre places are adiment they are not, so today when adjusting my clutch i pulled on the steering wrack and noticed a bit of play, is this normal?

i took the spare wheel etc out and looked in to it further, there is definatly a bit of play, see vid below...

Hmmm, will need to have a look at mine. I get a wobble at 70ish, wheels have been balanced, spigots don't help any either. Tracking was done and is spot on.

I'll have a look at my spare one 2moro and maybe rob the rack off that for myself.

Will have an answer for you 2moro though chief.

If I am looking at that the right way up, its the steering column end that is loose. Does the car have an adjustible column? maybe that just needs tightening up.

It must be attached to the frame behind the dash somehow. Dunno if there's bushes that could wear on there.

On a side note, is there a qauiffe or the likes steering rack available?

have you checked inner tie-rods (ball joint under rubber boots on ends of
rack..

I had a very bad shake at 40-70 mph and swore to myself it was tire.

it turned out to be rack leaking fluid and ruined dust boots which lead
to contamination of ball joints ..Previous owner never had it
fixed or was aware that was issue but i would say at least 5 years
road use and due to no grease caused increased friction on ball and
by the time i pulled it off the ball was 2/3 size of original and had
4-5mm of side to side movement which should be 0 on a new ball
joint.

Not saying that is your problem but easy way to check is jack up
one side at time and try to move wheel side to side if there is any play
at all could be inner rods..
