Well, since I'm waiting for the kit people for some bits and pieces, I guess its about time to go through the Firewall and see where we get.

The assumption is to resite the fuel tank into the spare wheel well, although the handbrake cables, brake lines and gear linkage will also require moving, along with keeping the torsional rigidity of the shell intact and creating a new structural firewall. :gay:

...... piccies on Sunday !

Woohoo!

Does this mean you can use the standard Mk3 suspension setup chief?

Now this is what I am so looking forward to seeing. Many challenges here Paul, but I know you're up to the task mate. I'll be cheering you on from here.
Have you got as far as deciding the size of the fuel tank yet?

PaulM

Yep, Aiming to use a custom subframe and probably drive shafts, but keep with original suspension, hubs, brakes etc.

Nigel, Dont speak too soon, i may be :banghead:

For fuel tank size its going to be a similar size to the spare wheel, which I think will make it quite a bit bigger than standard........which might be useful !

Absolutely it will be!

Lends itself to good weight distribution for the front end. Keep it coming Paul.

Cool, this is the one I have been waiting for . Me too. :boogie:

OK,
So this it what it looks like before

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/Subarupaul/Picture140.jpg

The wholes in the central section are where the coolant pipes would run on the other build.

I'll trim piece by piece out so as not to go too crazy, so after a bit of trimming

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/Subarupaul/Picture148.jpg

I want to keep the box section inplace as much as possible and am thinking about using it as a mounting point for the engine. Definately want to keep these bars in place.

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/Subarupaul/Picture142.jpg

So I'm now left with this

That's what am talking about!

Mr2 carnage. Love it.

How close to the front of that hole do you think the engine will sit?

PaulM
01-04-2009, 21:59
About 100-130mm, so plenty of room for pipework ! Thank god

Seriously interesting surgery mate. That looks like quite a bay there now.

PaulM

The engine isbasically in position now, it needs a bit of trim where the alternator will sit which is this shot - bottom right

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/Subarupaul/Picture152.jpg

There's a nice amount space in front for pipework

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/Subarupaul/Picture151.jpg

And the driveshaft alignment looks pretty good too

Not done much today, where I've cut the cross meember I've welded in a 3mm plate to blank them off, however I re-enforced it with another 3mm plate so its 6mm thick, where the threads are, so these will form the front two of the load points for the engine mount with the other two being the original engine mount positions. With all these four being tied to gether it should be sufficiently stron to replace the strength lost but going through the memeber. I'll be supporting the gearbox independently by modifying an orignal subframe.

Blanking plate in

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2009/04/16.jpg

Threaded and then plate over which I'll weld the struts to later.

i then found the centre line of the car with alaser to check how much I'd trimmed off the cross member.

It seems I'm 3mm out so no to bad as I can cancel that out in the engine mounts.

Looking at the position of the front of the engine, am I right in thinking that there is sufficient room to have the seat rake and range of movement the same as stock? Certainly looks that way, in which case the Roadster ,with surgery applied, has a pretty long engine bay really.

Should that not be dyslexic? lol

Hi Nigel,
Yep, it wont impinge on the normal cockpit area at all, apart from loosing most of the cubby boxes, which they'll still be some space for odds and sods, down the side.

Ach, if it throws a rod it'll throw it sideways out the car, not through the bulkhead at you as the normal setup does lol

She's not too bad, but like any old car cybil (CBL) has her own foybles, there's a worn suspension bush, air con needs a re-gas, the aeriel's broken. and the front bumper has has been replaced at some stage....but we have the technology to rebuild her :)
Just hope it doesnt cost six million dollars

(if you dont get that line, your too young ! )
