Well, seeing as I'm actually getting started now i thought I'd start a build thread on this thing, I say thing as I really don't know how its going to turn out but hey, if you don't try in the first place.

So I've got the shell

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/Subarupaul/100_0587.jpg

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/Subarupaul/100_0589.jpg

got it delivered yesterday and gave it a clean up and a touch of paint to so its not always dirty to the touch.

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2008/08/175.jpg

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2008/08/176.jpg

Then mated the V8 to the gearbox, got 8 bolts in there so its tight together.

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2008/08/177.jpg

then I've slung it under the car to see how it fits, which it does

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2008/08/178.jpg

...sort of.

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2008/08/179.jpg

theres space around the sides so that nice and tidy, just overall length thats the issue

At the moment, one option would be to change it to a 5 speed box which is a bit shorter or to move into the storage areas. As at the moment, one, its too long and two ,the driveshaft angle is i think too much at 17 degrees ish.

I'm waiting the dims on a 5 speed box as this may be a pragmatic approach for most people, as a conversion. With 360 bananas on tap, i dont think a 5 speed box would be a step backwards.

Meanwhile a kitcar company has asked me what could be done in regard to lengthening the MR-S for their next kit project. So I'll be splitting this build into three stages.

Stage-1 Long wheelbase version no cabin intrusion.
Stage 2 Standard wheelbase with no cabin intrusion (may be very shortlived)
Stage -3 Standard wheelbase with cabin intrusion

Cheers for now

Paul

cor, bloody fast progress!
standard wheelbase cabin intrusion for me, long wheelbase would surely look a bit funny? edit: obviously it would be with bodykit :freak3:

Carrera GT kit i'd bet! Would be awesome.

Fantastic build mate, keep posting and we'll keep helping as much as is humanly possible. Even if it's just a :poke2: of encouragement.

I'm going with a 430 possibly :)

OlberJ
19-08-2008, 18:03
The 430 is already out for the Mk2 though and there was a random person who created a carrera Gt out of his either Mk3 or Boxter, cannae mind.

Looked great, just that bit too short.

This would suit it a hundred time better.

The TRD Wide kit for the Mk3 would be awesome with a 250+bhp V8

paul, got to be standard wheelbase with cabin intrusion, you will have acres of space doing it that way.

PaulM
19-08-2008, 19:34
If you intrude 120mm, then that will get rid of the gearbox issue and will give you only a very small driveshaft angle of a couple of degrees.

You would need to put a cross-member in and put a new fuel cell in, I guess in the spare wheel well.

Correctomundo on the S8, its actually registered as a 98, but checking the engine code pings it to the 360 banana version, bought the whole car just for the engine, now breaking it down for cash

This is another great building thread on TB...agree with mr. Woods that cutting into cabin is the way to go, and you will get better weight front\back with the engine a bit longer to the front. How is the weight on this Audi enginge\gearbox compere to the 1uzfe\turbo box? Anyway, remember all the "sweat and tears" on the car will be long gone when you fire it up for the first time:thumbsup:

The difference is the block is approximately 6" shorter than tha 1uz. Paul would be looking at 250mm of cabin intrusion as opposed to 120mm. So it's an audi lump? There was a company near me in Dover (Scotts Motortune) who had a 720bhp one of these babies!

PaulM
23-08-2008, 08:19
Quick question to all, does the sump on the 1zz engine sit level with the floorpan of the car?

as there might be a height issue when moving it forward due to the slopey section that houses the hood.

Paul Woods
23-08-2008, 08:26
id just remove that slopey section and replace it with a removeable cover from inside the cabin, that way you have good engine access too.

Innocent
10-10-2008, 16:01
Yay, thought this had gone off the boil!!!

So will the standard wheelbase version be a standard MK3 swap rather than a replica job? Thats what I want to see! Widen it up with an APR kit or replica Monocraft GT300 (originals are rare as rocking horse sh*t) and you've got a real giant slayer. Works well in the JGTC. I'd want a dry sump on it though to help with all that extra weight or you'll end up with a back end slappy happy jappy chappy!!

With the inevitable move of the fuel system to the front on this, how safe would it be, if you end up nose first into a tree for instance...?

PaulM
10-10-2008, 19:04
Fuel tank in the front isnt too much of an issue, one could go for a full cell as used on the WRc cars, whcih I beliveve wont leak in the event due to their foamy insides.

mind you saying that I had a caterham thing a few years ago, and in anyone rear ended me ...ooh er misus...., that tank would habe been slammed into my back, and that was just a welded box!

PaulM

So a quick update

Made a new cross memeber and used the original engine mounts to locate the block, and did the same with the gearbox, so they're both sat on rubber mountings. Noe the playing around with bolt holes to get the correct position !!!!

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2008/12/127.jpg

Mounted the cross member on to the original engine mounts, but it looks like I'll have to profile the vertical to create a little more room, or it will probably make contact.

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2008/12/128.jpg

Also got some big discs for the front, ( the smaller disc is for a metro turbo !)

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2008/12/129.jpg

And discs hubs and bottom arms for the rear, these have camber and toe adjustment so should I should bea le to cock up the alignment to my hearts content :)

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2008/12/130.jpg

So this weekend I'm jigging up the suspension points from an original subframe, so they can be recreated on my subframe

Very intriguing, though the one I'm really waiting for is the original length chassis version, sending the engine into the storage bin area with removable cover. Mind you, if the Audi lump is 6" shorter than a 1UZ, I think that's what Woodsy means when it'll fit the Mk3, it will go in transversly!!

PaulM
13-12-2008, 14:49
Thanks for all the positive comments

BSM pm me and if your not doing much tomorrow pop over

Nigel, I think the main challenges with going transverse will be a suitable gearbox to take the low rpm torque and the width of the Audi engine its damn wide.

but then again if it is possible, PWs' the man.

Just a quick update as its been a while and I really should be getting further on with this, however, I have been delayed due to me being ill since christmas, fitting a new kitchen and the mother in law being quite seriously ill, so all the weekends have been focussed around a 300 mile round trip and hospital visits. Mind you, worse things happen at sea and I have been able to do a couple of things.

From the original audi subframe, I've copied all the suspension points and made it into a crude jig.

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/Subarupaul/Picture022.jpg

it looks pretty crude but is accurate

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/Subarupaul/Picture023.jpg

from this I've started to make the final pieces of the subframe , which will carry the suspension and bottom arms of the rear wishbones.

They look like this, which doesnt look like much at all, but took quite a while to get accurate.

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/Subarupaul/Picture107.jpg

I've just ordered some more steel plate, so when that turns up this week, I'll get on and finish them off . ( snow permitting)

I also picked up a pipe bender, so I could fabricate my own exhaust center pipes, however this is a pipe bender, rather than tube bender.

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/Subarupaul/Picture092.jpg

The difference I understand is all down to wall thickness, so when trying to bend thin wall stuff (tube, pipe is a thicker and measure on ID, pipe is measured by OD, I think), it tends to kink, rather than bend, which is a bit of a bugger, so I'm making some new formers to hopefully cure this problem.

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/Subarupaul/Picture094.jpg

Also looking at the subframe, i'm thinking of making out of tube rather than box, it'll look a lot neater bent, rather than with welds all over the place, so that tube, sorry pipe is also on order for a quick experiment.

Hopefully with my lungs now working properly ( Note to self: when sanding floors, face masks are a GOOD thing). I should be able to crack on a little more.

Keep on grinding
Paul

I heard a little trick a while back....not sure how reliable it is yet though

if you cap the ends of the tube your forming.after filling it with dry sand they tend not to deform anywhere near as bad, while being bent up in a pipe bender like yours. if your giving it a go...you got nothing to loose, might even work better;)

Doesn't work sketchy! we've tried it ourselves. If you fill the tube with sand it is still only 60% full - volumetrically speaking.

The formers for tube are a much bigger radius (usually) than pipe formers. You can buy the bends and elbows and just fab up as needed!

ukpaisley
09-02-2009, 17:24
We bend pipes at work, its better to roll the pipe, through a set of rollers, lots of fab shops can do this, but you would need to mock up what you need first to save time.

Quick update:

I've finished the suspension legs of the sub frame using my crude jig, and copied the suspension points onto the legs.

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/Subarupaul/Picture109.jpg

Sorry about the hue on the photos not quite sure whats happened, doing the same on the other side, gave me a pair

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/Subarupaul/Picture112.jpg

which fortunately, it seems to have worked, as the bottom arms fit right in.

Now iIjust need to weld them into the frame at the right distance apart to create the track I'm looking for and thats the bottom part of the subframe done.

I also had a look at the wiring loom, it looks like it will fit quite nicely, although i think I'll move the battery to create more space where the ECU will sit and move some weight forward, which wont do any harm I guess.

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/Subarupaul/Picture114.jpg

even on the other side where the fuel filters and returns, it seems to line up quite nicely,

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/Subarupaul/Picture115-1.jpg

I've also picked up an inline Walbro, just in case I want to move the tank forward as well.

So its coming on, slow but sure

Paul,

I can only concur with the others this an absolutely outstanding build.

Can I ask a question [I may have missed this in the thread] are there any bodywork mods required or does it fit in the original engine space with maybe some cabin intrusion?

If there is a 'stretch' required does it alter the wheelbase dimensions or extend the back end?

Once again, keep posting.

John.

PaulM
18-02-2009, 16:13
I'm working on a couple of options, the first is no cabin instrusion, but a longer wheelbase, this extends the bodywork by 8 inches>
The second is with cabin intrusion, but this will be on the same wheelbase , with no external body mods, but will require the loss of the storage bins and resiting the fuel tank into the spare wheel well

nik
18-02-2009, 16:21
def the cabin intrusion route for me..would be a real shame to alter the wheelbase imo..
this is a fascinating project..

Torero
18-02-2009, 19:58
Totally agree with Nik, cabin intrusion is best.

Paul, I am considering a custom modification which doesn't require the convertible roof, therefore, would it be feasible to intrude into the hood compartment rather than move the petrol tank? I appreciate that there are physical constraints but would this make the conversion easier?

loadswine
18-02-2009, 23:01
I don't know that you would get a lot by going into the hood area, but moving it all forward and resiting the fuel tank up front would give a super layout for everything.
If you wanted to be really clever, you could form a removable boot space above the gearbox for some storage. Either way a V8 Roadster ! Oh Yessss!

Torero
19-02-2009, 09:41
Thanks Loadswine. My train of thought on this was to make the conversion easier and cheaper by not having to relocate the petrol tank. But I do agree with your point about creating further storage

PaulM
19-02-2009, 13:49
Hi John,
Unfortunately, you would only gain a couple of inches in height by going into the roof area only.

There's a lot of benefits by fitting a new fuel tank into the spare wheel well, It obviously allows the engine to move all the way forward, it puts more weight over the front axle and it also allows a bigger fuel tank to be fitted, which must be a boon, when its running a 4.2ltr.

Cheers

Am liking the idea of a storage area over the gearbox. As the engine is inline you'll no longer need that odd exhaust setup (i say odd, it's how Fezzas do it) and you could turn it into a rather nice GT car :hmm:

Quick update,
Amalgamated the horizontal and longitudinal parts of the sub-frame, which now looks like this,

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/Subarupaul/Picture116-1.jpg

Which looks like sod all, but the time its taken to get it right seems olike an age.

God I'd love to get a week of work and really crack on, but hey ho.
More next weekend

Quick update as I'm off to a wedding

After lining up the sub-frame, Ineeded to extend it back a little to get the wheelbase right so I added some extra pieces, like so

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/Subarupaul/Picture118-1.jpg

then when trying to mount the bottom arms I realised the the drop outs, wouldnt allow the mounting of the rear link (which controls toe). I could just get rid of it, but it would be nice to have, so another mod, to the mod, took place.

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/Subarupaul/Picture119-1.jpg

The little stagger as you can see, allows the toe adjustment bar to come past now.

I also popped the drivehsaft in, to have a look at the angle, which doesnt look too bad, as I have to make an adapter to fit drivehsaft to gearbox, I cant decide, whether just to do that and use it as a an adapter and driveshaft extender, or extend the drive shaft as well AEK stylee Hmmm.

By this time its was getting on both wife and dogs were geting peeved

Quick update,
Dropped the subframe and engine this evening, , by removing teh rear bumper the whol unit just slides out, sub frame and all.

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/Subarupaul/Picture127.jpg

Next is to wire the engine up or rather put the original loom back on and re-fit the oil cooler air con pump, starter motor and alternator.

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2009/03/37.jpg

Then to replace the damaged parts, which aren't too many

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2009/03/38.jpg

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2009/03/39.jpg

I'll also replace the cam belt as there is a tiny bit of wear on the belt from the damaged belt cover, its only minimal but for £60 I'd rather have the piece of mind of a new belt than to take the risk of a snapping the belt and mashing the valves.

Thought it was time to position the exhaust, this is from a fezza 360.

Welding an L section onto the back of the subframe was the easiest way, it was quite simple to mount and fits in quite nicely

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2009/03/47.jpg

All of this is on a single subframe so it can be built off car and by removing the rear bumper can be slid into the engine bay. Now thats the exhaust is on, its even easier to move it around the garage too, boon!

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2009/03/48.jpg

I've also mocked up the centre pipe layout.

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/Subarupaul/Picture131.jpg

In this gap, I need to fit a cat and a flexi, so its going to be a little tight but shouldn't be too bad.

PaulM

finished the exhuasts today

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2009/03/88.jpg

Using a bit of heat made them bend a lot easier, the inside radius still creased a little, but the deformation of the rest of the pipe, which I was seeing previously has disappeared.
The subframe now looks like this

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/Subarupaul/Picture137.jpg

its time to start looking for a full car now, if anyone knows of a cheap one, preferably a non-runner, that it'd be cool, nit interested in the body condition either

Supposed they earned it though, who am i to question?

Does it come with those variable exhaust baffles chief?

Good grief.

There's another Paul I have to keep away from my wallet lol

Stunning work. Now make a kit for the Mk1 :p

Actually, maybe that would the ideal pair a Mk1 with V6 and a V8 Mk2/3, heheh.

OlberJ
16-03-2009, 23:54
I reckon the mk3 with the V8 will be stupendous.

Mk1/Mk2 will be one-off show pieces near enough, it just works so much better in a Mk3.

OlberJ
17-03-2009, 08:59
Purely a space issue.

I'd love if we could offer inline V8's in Mk1's but as you cans ee by Podge's build thread it's fairly major structural work.

With the Mk3 it's more a case of rejiggling stuff around. Pretty sure you could make a really good GT car out of a Mk3 with an inline V8.

Mk3 plus V8 plus Hardtop plus stealthy wheels.

Woof.

OlberJ
17-03-2009, 18:37
Oh it'll be an animal but throw in a boot type compartment above the gearbox and you're making the Mk3 an all rounder.

Not a full boot, just a compartment like you get on a proper supercar. Enough for a bag of clothes for your weekend hooning round europe

Nah i think it's an F430 rear, bit narrower mind you.

Or do DNA now do a 430 too?

biteme
17-03-2009, 22:08
I'd kill for a 430... I drove my mates one a few times and there's just nothing wrong with it. I can't think of a single way to improve it - apart from making it £10k.

Just got this from ebay, going to give it to the father inlaw first before mounting it so he can create some replica's.
It's an Audi RS4 flywheel and clutch so should fit perfectly and got it for a lot less than the $800 that the 034 ones are in the USA. (assuming it fits that is).
