i did a search and theres a fair bit of discussion floating around about wheel studs. however i couldnt find the specific dimensions i need. so im just wondering if anyone has the dimensions written down, or has an old wheel stud that is no longer fitted to the car that they could measure for me?

basically i want to get my own studs machined up so that they are 5-10mm longer (havent entirely decided yet) and also have a threadless toleranced "lead" on them, such that the nuts can be placed on the lead, and then just buzzed up and torqued without having to start them on the first thread. the lead will just ensure they go on square. makes life easier on wheel changes

ive got 2 options. i can either machine some up from scratch, which makes life tricky with the splined portion of the stud which il still need to be there to locate the stud and stop it rotating when tightening. or i can find some suitable studs for my purpose and simply turn down the threads on the end so that there is a toleranced diameter for the "lead"

so if someone has a stud they can measure that would be great. or even better, if someone knows where i can get some studs that are an exact fitment for the mk1 MR2 but at least 30mm longer (they can be longer than that, its not hard to machine them down) then i can cheat and just modify those

many thanks
JIM

hi jim most people that have extended thier wheel studs use aftermarket gm ones, now the splined part is slightly different but you can grind it down a touch then when tightened into the hub will recut its own spline the ones i used i think were 30mm longer than standard if you put a search in thers quite a few have done this so the information you kneed shouldbe here somewhare all the best podge

saw some mentions of these when i searched, guess il have to order a set and then have a play. for 80p a pop its not gonna break the bank! il have to get new nuts as well though for what i want to do, £26 for the whole lot, not too bad!

for those who have lightly ground the splines back and then hammered them in, has anyone ever had one spin on them?

best to buy em jim, they are forged on a bolt former (5 die 5 blow header or similar).
i used the ones from rally design, opel type 63mm long gives +25mm on standard. ford studs the knurl diameter are too small, theyve never spun thats with good torque aswell!. be sure to mic your knurls and holes up. 0.17-0.20 interference is an awfullot but it cuts the iron nicely / strong. heres an extract from an old post:

i had to mod the opel ones to get them in, you guys just touched the tops of the knurl with a grinder, i stuck them in the lathe turned the diameter down to 14.00 / 14.05(it was 14.4 before) and i measured the hub hole at 13.83mm i expect it go's to 13.98/14.00 on the splines. i also nudged a chamfer on the fornt end as the opel knurls are 10mm long, the mk1 hub thickness is 9mm, so i made sure the chamfer made 9mm otherwise the top of the knurl would stick thru the hub by about half a mil.

it still took a fair few large whacks with a FBCH and some loctite to be sure to be sure
